Volunteers are an essential part of ECCB 2026 and a great way to support the conference, meet the community, and gain behind-the-scenes experience.

Roles

  1. Registration and information desk: welcome attendees, provide programme and venue information, assist with the conference app, distribute vouchers, and direct speakers to the Speaker Service Center.
  2. Cloakroom support: operate the cloakroom, receive and return items, keep the area organized, and answer attendee questions.
  3. Room monitoring support: support scientific sessions by managing room access, keeping sessions on schedule, recording attendance, and assisting the technical moderator if needed.
  4. Venue guidance support: guide attendees between sessions, assist with wayfinding, and answer basic logistical questions.
  5. Technical session support: assist with presentations, microphones, and basic audiovisual needs in coordination with the AV team.
  6. Poster session support: help presenters with poster setup, pins, and board locations, and provide general support in the poster hall.
  7. Gong / Timekeeping support: signal session start, end, and transitions using the gong, ensuring sessions run on time in coordination with session chairs and room monitors.

Depending on the session format and technical needs, multiple support tasks may be handled by a single volunteer.

Commitments

  • Time commitment to contributing during at least one full conference day and maximum two full conference days, with shifts distributed in half days (~4 hours) or full day(s) (~8 hours).
  • Attendance to a 90-minute mandatory volunteer briefing on Sunday 30 August 2026, before the conference starts, at the CICG venue.
  • Volunteers must complete an availability form in advance and be available for assigned shifts throughout the full conference duration.
  • Volunteers must arrive on time, notify coordinators promptly in case of emergencies, and follow instructions from the SIB ECCB 2026 organizing team, hostesses, and IT staff.

Selection criteria

  • Volunteers must be 18+ years old and able to communicate in English at a functional level.
  • Application is open for MSc and PhD students; postdocs or early-career researchers may be considered depending on demand.
  • Preference is given to applicants demonstrating high availability, strong motivation, clear communication skills and previous experience.
  • Selection aims to ensure a diverse group of volunteers across institutions, countries, and scientific backgrounds.

Volunteer applicants are kindly requested not to register for the conference until their application outcome has been communicated.

Volunteer coordination will be managed by the ECCB 2026 Volunteer Coordinators, who oversee recruitment, scheduling, training, and general supervision. 

On site, volunteers will also receive operational support and guidance from the professional hostesses/event staff hired for the conference.
